Closed, it fits in a pocket, with a 5.4-inch outer screen that covers 90% of the display area you'd get on an iPhone 18 Pro. Unfold it, and you get a 7.6-inch inner display, 50% larger than the screen on an iPhone 18 Pro Max. To protect the folding screen, a scratch-resistant coating sits over a nano-textured polymer cover that Apple says is up to 40% stiffer than materials used elsewhere in the industry. Layers of glass above and below the folding panel are held together by adhesives designed to let them glide past each other like pages in a book (to reduce strain from bending). Apple says the front glass has 3x better scratch resistance than the previous version. The phone is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance. There's also a new FaceTime camera hidden underneath the inner display so it disappears when you're not using it. Apple is pitching this as a productivity and gaming device as much as a phone, with two apps running side by side on the big screen, though the real test of any foldable is still how the crease and hinge hold up after a year of actual folding. A machine also, allegedly, is what's reading this sentence right now inside your skull. Both claims trace back to the same 1936 paper, where Alan Turing described an imaginary device: an infinite paper tape, a scanner that reads one symbol at a time, and a fixed table of rules dictating what to write, erase, or move to next. No creativity, no judgement, just mechanical instructions followed exactly. Turing argued that this stripped-down setup, later called a Turing machine, could replicate any step-by-step procedure a human could carry out with pencil and paper. He went further and showed one particular version, a universal Turing machine, could mimic any other Turing machine if you fed it the right instructions. That's the same trick your laptop pulls off (with finite memory instead of Turing's infinite tape). It's also the reason some cognitive scientists started asking whether the mind itself might be one of these systems, an idea called the computational theory of mind. It was the dominant view in cognitive science through the 1960s and 70s, before rival theories emerged. The trouble is that showing a machine can simulate reasoning doesn't settle whether the mind is computation, in the way a weather simulation doesn't actually rain. Turing reframed the question in 1950: instead of asking “could a machine think”, he proposed asking “could a machine convince a human it's talking to another human”, the Turing Test. AI has since progressed from IBM's Deep Blue beating Garry Kasparov at chess in 1997 to ChatGPT's release in 2022, but that doesn't answer the harder question. Passing the test tells you a machine is convincing. It doesn't tell you whether there's anything computational going on inside your own head when you decide what to have for lunch.
